You will have heard people say that they are either larks or owls. Whichever category you fall into – early bird or night owl – breakfast is most definitely the best time to network. Here’s why:
Firstly, at breakfast time, nobody has yet accumulated the mass of information that any day as an entrepreneur brings. As well as meetings, reports to read (and/or write), memos to act upon, there is the Internet – as if we weren’t already drowning in data, advice and opinions. Networking while the mind is still fresh is the best way to form connections and sell your service/product.
Early on in the day you have yet to encounter any challenging or stressful situations. Taking a lunchtime call from an angry customer who you are unable to help may well put you in a negative frame of mind all afternoon. You will likely not communicate your marketing message so well as you would have at the start of the day.
Thirdly, networking over food removes a lot of the need to break the ice. Don’t want to start a conversation quite yet with the stranger next to you? No problem – just eat your scrambled eggs and conversation will come far more naturally.
So many of us skip or rush our meals that a networking breakfast gives everyone the chance to eat a decent and nutritious meal, which sets the mind up for some proactive networking.
If you do get a referral or make a useful contact at networking, this has a positive knock-on effect for the rest of the day.
Finally, go networking early enough and you miss out on the rush hour traffic.
